How Does a Freelancing Bidding Site Work?

A good way to start your freelancing career is to utilize the freelance bidding sites on the internet. There are several to choose from and they can help you build a portfolio of experience to start your own business down the road.
Each bidding site runs a little differently, so you’ll want to check each one out to see what exactly you need to do. Most offer different levels of memberships that range from paid to free. The benefits of each membership package will vary with each one.
You will simply sign up for one of the membership packages and type in your information in the profile section to show what experience you have in a certain area. This is where the clients will see what skills you bring to the table and help them determine if you are someone they want to work with or not.
Everyday clients will post the projects they need done on the site. The freelancers who are capable of performing the task will place a bid for the project. The clients will periodically check the bids to see who has the best bid and who seems to be the most experienced for what they want done.
Some projects will have a specific time period that they will be accepting bids on the job and once that period has been met, the job posting is then closed and a decision is made. Some project postings may be closed before the time period is up, so getting your bid in right away would be helpful.
If your bid is chosen by a client, you will be notified, through the site, about the particulars the project holds. The client will probably verify the bid price with you before going any further. The account you have signed up for will provide you with a way for the client and you to contact each other while keeping your personal information safe.
Payments for the projects completed and accepted by clients are usually paid through the escrow accounts that the freelancing sites have set up. While you have the option of being paid directly with checks or through PayPal, it is recommended that you use the escrow account offered to you by the site.
In most cases, the client would have to pay the pre-determined amount for the project before you start working on it. The payment would sit in the escrow account until you complete the project asked of you. Once it’s accepted, the payment can be released to your account for you.
Each site is different in how they work, but most ask you to pay a certain percentage of each project you work on. This could be paid through the escrow from your project payment. Some memberships that are paid give you the option of waiving that fee, so you will want to check each site before deciding which one works for you.
Each person that works on a project on a site will receive some type of feedback for the quality of work they performed for the client. If you did well and met the deadline asked of you, you will receive good ratings. The more you find work, the more ratings you can build up in your profile.
The highest ratings usually get the highest paid work, so be sure to do your best on every project you win through these sites. A bad rating can hurt you and could be difficult to overcome in the long run. It can make the difference in the amount of bids you win or the possible ongoing work you could have been hired for. Some employers skim through these profiles looking for freelancers to do ongoing jobs for them and aren’t interested in posting them for bids.
Your portfolios can be built with the work you do on these sites, which can be useful in the future if you choose to go into business on your own.

* Join them and begin reading the step-by-step guidance provided.

Well, I believe from looking at past history, that many successful people join 2 - 3 programs later focusing in on the ones they enjoy working the most. It gives you a better chance for success. We see daily reports on how the economy is doing. You see a few good reports and a whole lot of bad reports. I have found that the truth normally lies in the middle. History shows that the economy goes through cycles but we have seen much worse times in the past. You know what. That does not really matter to everyday people who either cannot find a job or are unable to work for one reason or another.
Many people are looking to create a few extra dollars to pay the bills. There are people struggling to get by. One thing I learned along time ago is you never know what’s going on in any home or neighborhood. You will find people at all income levels struggling to get by and pay their bills. Do people miss-manage their money? Sure they do, but the fact remains they are looking for relief. I think everyone has made poor financial decisions at some point in their life.
If you evaluate the searches made daily on the major search engines like Google, Ask, Yahoo, Msn and others you will find people searching for phrases like free work at home opportunities, free work at home, free work at home programs, free work at home data entry and many more.
If you search the Internet there are thousands of work at home programs, but you really have to do your research to keep from being scammed by the many useless programs available to the uninformed user. For a minimal fee you can find some good work at home programs in area such as data entry, type at home, rebate processing, paid surveys and more.
The truth is the cost of these programs are minimal and your are probably going to make money faster if you indeed do invest in some of the companies that charge a minimal fee. Having said that, can you find moneymaking opportunities for free? Sure you can, but in place of the money you will have to spend your time rather than money learning how to create income.
Here are a few examples of the types of income generating free programs that can be found when searching the Internet:
* Multi-level marketing
* Surveys
* Data Entry
* Type at Home
You can also find programs, whereby you save money on products you use on a monthly basis. This should free up money that you would have spent for other items. You can also share these types of programs with others and get paid residual incomes.
Do your research on the Internet and I think you will find as I did that you will be able to find maybe 5 -10 programs that will enable you to join for free and teach you how to generate income. How and why would they do that? Well in some cases it’s like called multi-level marketing, whereby they will make a very small percentage off of everything you make so their success is tied to yours. This is a good thing and should not be seen as a negative.
You are going to have to put in some real effort to learn how to create income on the Internet. In my opinion that’s the real difference between the paid programs web site owners such as myself have on their work at home directories and the free programs we list. They save you the time it takes to go up the learning curve, but don’t be discouraged. You may have to spend some time, but if the programs are free to join, why not give yourself a shot?
In summary, my suggestion is to, either use a website that has done the research for you or do it yourself and join as many of the free programs as possible. Once you have learned about your choices, you can then focus on the ones that you enjoy and that generate income for you. Have you considered freelancing to get started making some money? It could be a great idea to try out. There are several sites available that will teach you how to freelance, how to get the jobs, and then several other sites that let you bid for jobs.
I have done a little freelancing through such sites and have a little advice to offer. First of all I started with a site called www.getafreelancer.com the reason why is because they gave you 15 free bids a month. After that it is only 12 a month to get another 150 bids.
They have an escrow payment for the service providers and inside projects if you are a paying member.
I did check out www.elance.com but found they charged way too much for me to make any money starting out. I do several different things online to make money and I wouldnt have enough time to dedicate to elance to make the most out of each and every bid I could get.
Another site I really love to visit is www.freelanceswitch.com it is a blog about being a freelancer and they teach you all sorts of stuff about finding work, keeping clients, firing horrible clients and more.
Their site is free to read and I definitely recommend it.
Just so you know there are tons of different things you can do online as a freelancer, from writing to installing scripts on websites to designing them and much more, it is a great place to start and if you have trouble you can always google up some help or ask at different forums about jobs you have accepted. There are hundreds of tutorials available online as well for learning.

Writing is only a small part of being a freelance writer. One also needs to troll tirelessly for jobs and market oneself. Marketing means lots of different things to lots of different people, but basically it’s how you put yourself out there and the image you present to potential clients.

When I began freelancing I made two decisions right off the bat:
- Unless I was in danger of starving, I would never again work in a sterile cubicle. I’d pick a cubicle over death…but not by much,
- I’d keep my space happy and all my favorite things close by me in the office.
This probably sounds like freelance advice from the Antichrist to many of you, but hear me out.
One of my hobbies is playing guitar. Actually, for me playing guitar is a sinister all-consuming obsession. Some days I wish I were addicted to crack instead; I’d be in much better shape.
Productivity specialists and professional organizers are often of the same opinion, namely that you should move your guitars and other distractions into a different room from where you work. Supposedly you’ll be more productive that way. Heck, while you’re at it why not move everything except your office out of your office, which is supposed to be empty and used for working only, right?
No way. This is one reason I wanted out of a cushy job in corporate America in the first place. Now I keep everything close by. My stereo, guitars, Moleskines, sketchbooks, magazines, all my books and of course the internet … everything I like is in my office where I work. Why?
- Things are only distractions if you let them be
- Because I like the stuff I own. That’s why I bought it.
Those things we’re so quick to call vices and “dangers to productivity” are actually rewards for production. (You have those don’t you? And I don’t mean money.)
Your things are inspiration. They’re how you live and what make you who you are. Why can’t I decide to take ten minutes off for guitar playing, or a whole afternoon for rock-climbing, or a long lunch so I can read a funny book? That’s why we freelance isn’t it?
50 days in the hole!
It’s not without reason that inmates in prisons are punished by loss of books, magazines and personal items/activities. That’s not the type of working environment we want.
As a caveat, certainly there’s the danger of goofing off too long. That leads to not meeting deadlines, loss of clients, starvation and finally death.
But in the freelance world that’s just natural selection. If you don’t keep yourself disciplined you’ve had it, and you’ll soon have a disciplined alarm clock waking you up and new boss to keep you disciplined at your new job.
Use your distractions as leverage
You can set little targets for yourself. “As soon as this CSS validates, I’m playing guitar for ten minutes!” or “As soon as I write 1,000 words, I’m going rock climbing!”
This gives me a reason to work hard, a reason that’s often way more valid than, “I need the money.”
And you’ll kill another bird with this stone: taking a break. It seems to be a common theme among the freelancers I know that we just don’t stop working enough. We’ve got to get outside, rest our eyes, exercise and just goof off. Our health, productivity and happiness all depend upon it.
Knowing I get to put my feet up or goof off with my stuff makes me happy. When I’m happy I work better. I’m no genius but that seems like a pretty straightforward equation.
You may find your concentration is even better
In order to not be distracted by your personal belongings you willl have to concentrate a little bit harder, but only in the beginning. Before too long you’ll find that by concentrating harder, you won’t really need to concentrate at all any more. You’ll be in “the zone” or that “deep state of whatever you want to call it.” I just call it working, which is not to be confused with concentrating.
I’ve often found that when I set little goals for myself of, say, working for twenty minutes straight, I’ll look up later and see that I’ve been at it for a solid two hours. I’ll have gotten an amazing amount of work done without once thinking, “Geez, time for me to buckle down and get a lot done.”
On the other hand…
You may have trouble with having too many goodies close by, which I understand, I really do. Some people have a little more trouble concentrating than others, just like I have trouble not eating every chocolate chip cookie on the planet. If that’s the case for you and you find this the biggest “un-productivity” tip you’ve ever heard, do what works for you.
But before you write this off as flippant, you might give it a shot. It’s too easy to sell yourself the story that it’s your guitars that keep you from working or achieving your goals. Your distractions just sit there after all. It’s you who has to give them your time.

After our recent discussion about $3 writing jobs, I received a flurry of emails suggesting the $3 gigs are easy to find and the higher paying freelance writing jobs are being saved for the veteran freelance writers. I’m here to tell you this isn’t true. If all you’re finding is $3 jobs, you’re looking in the wrong places.

Is taking care of your customers and clients something that just happens in your freelancing business? Or do you actively set about making sure you keep your clients as happy as possible?
One of the buzz concepts of the management consulting world a few years ago was the “client lifecycle”.
The concept of a client lifecycle is something that any freelancer can apply to their business and benefit from. In a nutshell, it comprises of the phases that each of your clients go through whilst they work with you, starting from the moment they first become aware of you and what you do.
The benefit of understanding this for your freelance business is that you can design and control what happens in each of those phases. This means that not only are you proactively determining what happens in your business and managing it, you are also focusing on and building your business around one the most important components of your business: your clients.
Here is what a client lifecycle looks like…
So how do you apply this to what you do as a freelancer? For starters, you can begin by ensuring you’ve got the following points covered for each stage in your client lifecycle:
Stage 1 Awareness and Consideration
- Who are you trying to attract?
- How will they find out about you? Via which channels?
- Are these the optimum channels based on their habits, needs and lifestyles?
- What first impression would you like prospects to have of your business?
- Do your marketing materials convey this impression?
Stage 2 Select and Buy
- What choices do you offer each of your target audiences?
- How easy is it for your prospects to find more about you and your services?
- How simple are your services/products to understand for prospects?
- How easy is it for them to choose the right solution?
- How simple is your buying process?
Stage 3 Initial Experience
- What is a new client’s first impression of actually “doing” business with you?
- Does their first post-purchase experience with you match up to your marketing story, sales pitch or your initial promises?
Stage 4 Use, Learn and Support
- Have you educated your clients about the way you want to work with them?
- Do you make it easy for your clients to use your services?
- Do you have a support “policy” that provides what your clients need but doesn’t require you to be at their every beck & call, driving you mad with frustration?
- Do your clients know what this support policy is?
- Do you have an organised & structured “back end” to your business that enables you to focus on servicing your clients effectively?
Stage 5 Repurchase and Recommend
- Do your clients know about the additional support, services or options available to them after their first purchase from you?
- If your business thrives on referrals, how easy is it for clients to refer business to you? How do you encourage this?
- Do you reward long term, loyal clients for their business?
- How much does your business value loyalty? How do you encourage this?
- Do you have systems & processes set up to make it easy & stimulate existing clients to buy from you again, more frequently or be rewarded for referring people to you?
Building your freelancing business around the specific needs of your clients is something that can give you a huge advantage over your competition - big and small. One of the first places to start to understand these needs is to understand your client lifecycle; once you understand it, put it to good use and your clients won’t be able to walk away!

With the start of the New Year upon us, the likelihood of you deciding to head off into Freelancing full-time may be tickling your senses. We understand your passion to make it on your own, and present our Top 10 Freelance Resolutions for this coming year. Already freelancing? Hopefully some of these concepts will help you recommit to your endeavor, and subsequently bring you success in the years to come.
1. Know Your Market
So you know what you like to do. Great. And you’ve put together a contract, and a list of contacts to help generate leads. But do you really know your market? Market research is an important aspect of getting your business rolling, but even more importantly, it is vital for future of your freelance career. If you don’t know your market, you don’t know what your competition is up to, or even who your potential customers are or will be. Do yourself a big favor and make this a priority.
2. Find a Mentor
The value of a business mentor is vastly underrated in the freelance world. In the corporate world, a good manager can serve as the mentor, providing tips, growth ideas, and support. As an entrepreneur, you need a mentor too. Who would this person be? A trusted business person who you want to develop a close (and free) relationship with in order to help develop your business and personal growth.
It is easy to believe that we are the only ones dealing with a specific issue, but a mentor can help you realize that the issue isn’t unique, and help you create a resolution. They’ve been there, done that, and have a network of contacts which can be a real life saver. Many local small business associations (SCORE, for a US example) provide this service if you are having trouble finding someone.
3. Set Small Goals
Your business plan helps to outline your overall goals. And you probably have some big goals in mind when it comes to your business. But did you know that by thinking about your goals, and then breaking them into a series of smaller goals that lead to the result, that you are more likely to succeed? This is true for a couple of reasons. First, it will make the tasks seem less intimidating. And if you aren’t intimidated, then you are less likely to make excuses for not completing said steps. Second, by creating a list of small goals, you are outlining the overall steps needed, and can check off those items as you make progress. In this fashion, just like packing for a long trip, you are unlikely to forget an important stage. Don’t be afraid to post these small goals where you, your family (and friends), and even mentor can see them. We’ll explain why in just a moment.
4. Listen More (Talk Less)
We all love to talk about our hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. But we can also provide so much information to a potential customer, that they lose track of what you are trying to express to them. Think about your business line and capabilities, and distill this into a 60 second blurb. Memorize, print out, and even post the blurb. Next time you have an opportunity to talk about your business, share this with the lead and then listen very carefully. If you’ve done things right, your future client will start telling you their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments, and will start thinking
